Time: from 12.11.2020 to 26.12.2020, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (from 16:00 to 19:30) and Saturday (from 09:00 to 16:00). Exam will be on 27.11.2020, from 16:00 to 18:00, in the premises of the Institute of Social Medicine (Dr Subotica 15, right side, big classroom).

Place: due to COVID-19, the module will be delivered in blended form, lectures and seminars will be in digital environment, while exercises will be in classrooms of Faculty of Medicine, depending on the number of students each instructor will decide about the best premises. Online lectures and seminars will be on the Reticulum – online platform of the Faculty of Medicine.

 

Objectives, expected outcomes and competences

Objectives of the module are directed towards the basic knowledge of the new public health in order to explain, classify and accept core public health competences and essential public health functions. After completing the course students will be empowered to critically appreciate the differing approaches in public health and will be able to:

  1. Identify the philosophy and unique characteristics of public health, explain the phases in the development of this discipline and make a difference between the traditional and new public health,
  2. Accept new trends in explanation and performance of essential public health functions and services in the world, Europe and their own countries,
  3. Recognize the basic fields of public health research, with the qualitative and quantitative methods casting highlighting research problems,
  4. Describe underling ethics of public health and different approaches to implementation of evidence based public health interventions.
  5. Analyse the comprehensive system of public health within the current threats and challenges.

 

Content of the module

This module is designed to promote the application of public health sciences to a wide range of common problems and issues. It will portray the philosophy and underlying principles of public health, the methods used in the assessment of public health problems and current solutions to these problems. History, concepts and concerns of public health, essential public health functions and core competences, social determinants of health, public health policy and ethics, will be focus of this module. The complex approach to development and evaluation of evidence based public health programmes will be analysed. The students will gain experience in assessment and interpretation of existing data and methods of using those data, with the aim of influencing specific policies or decision-makers at the global, European and national level. Students will accept and demonstrate the skills of public health team building.

Teaching methods

Sixty hours (60 hrs) under supervision consist of lectures and practical sessions, i.e. interactive presentations in which presentation of content will be supplemented with a variety of questions, interactions, visual aids, and instructional materials in digital environment. If possible, students will demonstrate a team work in describing public health challenges. During facilitated practice in classroom students will apply the content presented in theoretical sessions. Instructor will explain procedures, demonstrate tasks and observe and interact with students by providing ongoing feedback. Using case studies and literature students will present in written form specific public health challenges of today. Students will be enable the sharing of information and ideas and encourage using of print resources, databases and other online resources to acquire familiarity and expertise in support of course objectives. The individual student is therefore expected to work independently on home assignments and the reading of course books before each session, while some assignments will be completed as a group work, if possible.

Hundred and thirty hours (135 hrs) will be for course work without supervision. Students are expecting to participate actively in course (preparing for lectures, seminars and exercises, doing necessary homework and carrying out the appropriate assignments).

Means of evaluating student performance (maximal number of points: 100)

Graded course. Evaluation will be based upon:

• 10% Participation (attendance, discussion of readings and journal articles, case studies solving)

• 20% Homework

• 70% Final Exam (Seminar work on selected public health challenge 30%, Test of Knowledge 30%).

Student completed this module if he/she attended lectures, exercises, completed homework and seminar work and delivered to the module coordinator in electronic and print form (email address: vesna.bjegovic-mikanovic@med.bg.ac.rs).

Dead-line for delivery of homework is 16.11.2020, while on 27.11.2020. student should also deliver this homework in print version. Dead-line for delivery of seminar work is 26.11.2020, and 27.11.2020. for print version. If the student does not submit homework on time, 5 points will be deducted, and if he / she does not submit seminar work on time, 10 points will be deducted.
